Second, did you know that we hold black belt testing twice per year – usually May and November? We do, and black belt testing is far different from regular belt testing. We have many new students these days, so let’s describe what this is like.
Black belt testing is a 2-day test. The first part is on Friday night from 18:00 to 21:00, and it is a fitness marathon. During this portion, the goal is to finish…students end up doing hundreds of pushups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, kicks, punches, forms, and more. We are trying to break the students in this part of the test. How much do these students want their next rank? Are they willing to push themselves to their limits – and beyond? Will they allow their bodies to take over their minds, or use their minds to overcome?
The second day of black belt testing is the technical portion, covering nearly all of the belt testing requirements for all ranks. Believe it or not, this is actually the easier part of the test, even though it requires a score of 80% or higher in order to qualify for the rank.
So when the next black belt testing rolls along, maybe you should come in and watch part of it. You’ll get a sense of how hard the students work who stick with karate long enough to test for a black belt. Remember – black belt is a state of mind. Will you overcome the odds?
